The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Alberta's emerging data-centre sector received a boost from one of the province's biggest electricity providers as Capital Power announced a long-term deal to supply energy to an unnamed artificial intelligence platform. The Globe's Andrew Willis and Emma Graney write that Capital Power said on Wednesday that it signed a binding memorandum of understanding to provide 250 megawatts of electricity to an "investment grade data-centre developer." Capital Power will be among several companies producing electricity for what is expected to be a large Alberta data-centre project, chief executive officer Avik Dey said. He mentioned that confidentiality agreements stopped him from revealing the data-centre operator's identity. Capital Power disclosed that if the data-centre operator backs out of the MOU, it will pay the power producer a termination fee. A source says Capital Power's potential client is another data-centre provider, not Meta. Data centres are reliable customers for Capital Power, say analysts, as it has unused generation capacity at facilities like its Genesee gas plant near Edmonton, converted from coal power last year at a cost of $1.6-billion.
