The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday edition that Capital Power chief executive officer Avik Dey says new gas-fired power plants can support large data centres in Alberta following the Canadian government's relaxation of environmental standards for electricity. The Post's Jordan Gowling writes that Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith signed an agreement on Nov. 27 to suspend Canada's clean electricity regulations as they work to improve Alberta's carbon-pricing system. Mr. Dey noted the new regime makes it feasible to consider expanding the 1,857-megawatt Genesee site, recently converted from coal to gas. He said: "It's a site that today could accommodate a 1,000-megawatt, one million-square-foot hyperdata centre. We think it's one of the most uniquely situated sites for a large data centre in North America, because it takes advantage of existing infrastructure and transmission." One gigawatt, or 1,000 megawatts, is equivalent to the power of one traditional nuclear reactor. Capital Power has been focused on expansion in the United States since former prime minister Justin Trudeau brought in rules that would have required power generators to have net zero emissions in Canada by 2050.
