The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, May 2, edition that Capital Power has abandoned plans for one of Canada's largest carbon capture projects, dealing a setback to the country's efforts to decrease emissions from industries that produce or heavily rely on fossil fuels. The Globe's Adam Radwanski writes that Capital Power announced in its quarterly earnings report on Wednesday that it is discontinuing pursuit of the $2.4-billion project because it does not work financially. It had previously said that the proposal would annually capture up to three million tonnes of emissions from natural-gas units at its Genesee generating station in Alberta. The company said in a statement: "Through our development of the project, we have confirmed that CCS [carbon capture and storage] is a technically viable technology. However, at this time, the project is not economically feasible." Senior vice-president Jason Comandante said earlier this year the company was considering parking the project because it was disappointed by the pace of negotiations with the Canada Growth Fund. The CGF is the new federal agency that has the task of offering revenue-certainty tools broadly known as carbon contracts for differences (CCfDs).
