The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Capital Power is a cheap stock with a big dividend. The Globe's David Berman writes that now, investors with particularly long-term horizons can point to the company's nuclear ambitions as a third compelling reason to own the shares. On Monday, Capital Power announced an agreement with Ontario Power Generation to look at developing small modular reactors (SMRs) in Alberta. They will start with a two-year feasibility assessment, with the goal of producing nuclear power by 2035. "The evaluation of SMRs aligns with the company's knowledge of the local market and growing concerns around grid reliability, voiced recently by the Alberta government," says ATB Securities analyst Nate Heywood. Granted, 2035 is a long way out for investors who might be more focused on Capital Power's next quarterly dividend distribution. The move, however, fits with a company that is transforming itself by investing in cleaner sources of energy and expanding its footprint with deals and developments outside its home province of Alberta. Monday's announcement on the company's potential expansion into nuclear power sent the share price up. It closed at $37.35 in Toronto, up $1.18.
