Mr. Jonathan McGuire reports
GLOBAL X LAUNCHES GLOBAL X ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE MEMORY INDEX ETF (DRAM), AND SIX OTHER ETFS
Global X Investments Canada Inc. has launched seven new exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Units of the ETFs begin trading today on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
Led by the Global X Artificial Intelligence Memory Index ETF (DRAM) and the Global X Asia Semiconductor Index ETF (ACHP), the launches give Canadian investors new ways to access the physical infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence (AI), the semiconductor ecosystem across Asia, South Korea's largest public companies, broad Canadian equities, and core Canadian and U.S. bond markets.
Equity ETF launches
Global X is launching four new equity ETFs, expanding its suite of AI-focused thematic and sector funds with the launch of DRAM and ACHP, while broadening its lineup of single-country focused ETFs with the launch of the Global X Korea KOSPI 200 Index ETF (KORX) and the Global X S&P/TSX Capped Composite Index ETF (CNDC).
More details on the equity ETFs are included in an attached table.
Expanding Global X's AI ETF suite: DRAM and ACHP
The investment story surrounding AI has largely focused on advanced processors. However, the performance of AI systems also depends on the memory and storage technologies that feed data to those processors quickly and efficiently. As AI models become larger and inference workloads expand, high-bandwidth memory, dynamic random-access memory, and advanced storage are becoming increasingly important parts of the AI infrastructure stack and of interest to investors.
DRAM offers targeted exposure to leading companies involved in memory semiconductors and data storage solutions. Its underlying index covers businesses connected to flash drives, solid-state drives and hard disk drives. This focused mandate is designed to help investors access an essential but often underrepresented layer of the AI buildout.
ACHP takes a broader view of the semiconductor value chain, investing in leading companies from developed and emerging Asian markets involved in semiconductor design, production, equipment and enabling technologies. Asia is home to many of the global leaders responsible for designing and manufacturing chips, memory and equipment that power the world's digital economy.
With the addition of DRAM and ACHP, Global X now offers eight funds focused on the global AI opportunity, spanning the pure-play software approach offered by the Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology Index ETF (AIQ) to the commodity and electrical infrastructure underpinning its expansion through the Global X Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Index ETF (MTRX).
"AI's infrastructure layer is becoming broader and more specialized. Processors may attract most of the attention, but even the most advanced chip cannot perform to its full potential unless data can move quickly enough to keep it supplied," said Chris McHaney, executive vice-president, head of investment management and strategy at Global X. "DRAM gives Canadian investors focused exposure to the memory and storage companies addressing that challenge, while ACHP extends the opportunity across Asia's semiconductor ecosystem."
Investing at home and abroad with Global X's single-country ETFs
The Global X Korea KOSPI 200 Index ETF (KORX) provides access to 200 large and liquid companies listed on the Korea Exchange. South Korea is home to globally important businesses across semiconductors, consumer electronics, automotive manufacturing, batteries, industrials and financial services. KORX gives Canadians broad access to that market through both Canadian-dollar and U.S.-dollar units.
Rounding out the equity launches, the Global X S&P/TSX Capped Composite Index ETF (CNDC) provides broad exposure to the Canadian equity market at a management fee of 0.05 per cent, offering investors a low-cost core portfolio building block alongside Global X's more targeted sector, thematic and income-oriented strategies.
"KORX and CNDC address two distinct parts of portfolio construction. KORX gives Canadian investors broad access to South Korea, a market that is home to global leaders across semiconductors, automotive manufacturing, batteries and industrials. CNDC provides low-cost exposure to the breadth of the Canadian equity market, making it a strong core building block. Together, they give investors greater choice in how they construct both domestic and international equity allocations," said Mr. McHaney.
Fixed income ETF launches
Global X is also launching three index-based fixed income ETFs that broaden its lineup of portfolio building blocks. The fixed income ETFs provide access to the broad Canadian investment-grade bond market, shorter- and intermediate-term Canadian corporate credit, and U.S. treasuries with three to 10 years remaining to maturity. More details on the fixed income ETFs are included in an attached table.
The launches build on Global X's long history in fixed income fund innovation. The firm launched the country's first actively managed fixed income ETFs in 2009, and has developed a broad range of solutions spanning active bond strategies, cash alternatives and premium yield ETFs, which use an options overlay to generate additional income for investors.
AGGX, GCIG and TMTX add benchmark fixed income exposure to Global X's platform, giving Canadian investors and advisors greater flexibility to manage duration, credit and currency exposure within their portfolios.
"Global X has managed fixed income ETFs through very different market and interest rate environments, and that experience has reinforced the importance of choice," said Kelvin Kingsley, vice-president, portfolio manager, fixed income, at Global X. "Some investors want active management or enhanced income; others need simple, low-cost index exposure for the core of a portfolio.
AGGX, GCIG and TMTX expand our low-cost index lineup across Canadian and U.S. fixed income, further strengthening Global X's position as a comprehensive provider of fixed income ETF solutions."
The ETFs closed their initial offering of units to their designated broker and will begin trading today on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
