The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday, July 28, edition that Ukraine is looking to sign a 30-year strategic energy agreement with Canada and proposing an "energy security bridge" focused on the supply of Canadian LNG, Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that the proposal, which Mr. Shmyhal discussed with federal Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson, follows agreements reached by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister Mark Carney. During the talks, Canada proposed $650-million in direct grant support to help Ukraine purchase gas for winter, as part of a larger aid package. Ukraine has faced ongoing Russian strikes on its energy infrastructure during the war, which is now in its fifth year. Mr. Zelenskyy this month overhauled his government and said preparations for winter were a key reason driving the change. State-run NJSC Naftogaz Ukrainy chief executive officer Sergii Koretskyi was named as prime minister, replacing Yulia Svyrydenko. Ukraine's power and heating infrastructure remain vulnerable to Russian ballistic-missile strikes and low supplies of interceptors.
