The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Cogeco has launched its mobile wireless service in Canada, available initially to customers who purchase its Internet package. The Globe's Irene Galia writes that the service will roll out in 12 cities across Ontario and Quebec, including Alma, Rimouski and Brockville. A full commercial launch is planned for the fall. On Wednesday chief executive officer Frederic Perron said, "We'll target low to mid-data users and will provide a time-limited launch bonus for the first wave of customers joining us." Chief financial officer Patrice Ouimet said Cogeco was keeping an eye on the broader Canadian wireless market but that it is not aiming to compete on that scale. He said, "It's not a strategy to go national or anything like that." The additional service will allow existing subscribers to bundle Internet and mobile products -- a strategy that Cogeco hopes will make them more likely to remain customers, reducing churn. Mr. Perron said, "Wireless will become a powerful tool to retain and grow our North American wireline customer base over time." Cogeco posted revenue of $758.5-million in its quarter ended May 31, down from $777.2-million in the same quarter last year.
