The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Oct. 9, edition that artificial intelligence stocks have led recent rallies, but gold miners, quantum computing and crypto equities have also surged; short-sellers are betting some gains are excessive, even targeting stocks with strong insider support, notably increasing short positions in Centerra Gold to about 5.9 million shares, about 3 per cent of its float as of Sept. 30, up more than 1.9 million shares since Sept. 15, even as insiders were buying the stock. The Globe's guest columnist Ted Dixon writes that Centerra operates the Oksut mine in Turkey and the Mount Milligan mine in British Columbia; the Mount Milligan life-extension is a provincial priority and shorts increased notably even as insiders were buying the stock. Since Sept. 16 four Centerra insiders bought 18,550 shares at an average of $13.11, buying into a four-year high; their purchases helped create a short-squeeze signal and the stock continued its rally, reaching new four-year highs in early October.
