FP/wire say Cameco CEO bullish on outlook for uranium

2025-10-23 07:14 ET - In the News

The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that Cameco chief executive officer Tim Gitzel says the uranium industry has suffered through some dramatic lows in the past decade, but it is now facing an "unprecedented" upswing as countries search for low-carbon sources of energy. A Postmedia dispatch to the Post reports that Mr. Gitzel told a crowd in Saskatoon that demand for Canada's uranium is only growing. He said Tuesday at the Canadian Nuclear Association: "We had about 10 years of bad highway for us in the nuclear industry, the uranium space that we soldiered through. We had to make some pretty tough decisions, and put thousands of people out of work here in Saskatchewan." He was talking about the early 2010s, after the Fukushima Dachii nuclear disaster in 2011 forced the shutdown of over 50 reactors in Japan, leading to a global slowdown in uranium demand. Mr. Gitzel said: "Today, we are living in a moment of what I would call unprecedented movement for nuclear power, the likes of which I have not seen in over 40 years in this business. From Europe to Asia, across North America, countries are grappling with that complex issue of how to power their economies reliably, affordably and sustainably."
