Globe says Moe fighting to protect Cameco, Nutrien

Also In the News (C-NTR) Nutrien Ltd

The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday edition that Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe believes his non-confrontational approach to U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff threats has benefited the province, helping it avoid duties on its energy and critical minerals sectors. A triple bylined item led by Niall McGee reports that this contrasts with Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who has vocally defended Canada, popularizing the "Canada is not for sale" motto after Mr. Trump's annexation threats. While Saskatchewan has largely escaped U.S. tariffs on key industries like oil and gas, Ontario has faced tariffs on its auto and steel sectors. The effectiveness of each approach remains debatable. Uranium mined by Cameco and potash mined by Nutrien are other major U.S.-destined exports from the province. Energy, uranium and potash at one point were all being threatened with 10-per-cent tariffs by Mr. Trump, but ultimately all three industries were spared. Covertly, Mr. Moe has also been fighting to protect these industries from further damage had Mr. Trump indeed pulled the trigger on his threatened tariffs. Earlier in the year, Ottawa mulled that uranium and potash could be used as leverage to put pressure on Mr. Trump.
