The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday edition that uranium stocks, once thriving, are struggling as 2025 begins. The Post's Geoffrey Morgan writes that trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada are impacting the market. Additionally, talks for a ceasefire in Ukraine may lead to looser sanctions on Russian uranium production, increasing supply. Uranium prices have fallen over a third since early 2024, with an 11-per-cent decline this year alone. The Global X Uranium ETF, which tracks mining shares, has dropped about 5 per cent in 2025, and Cameco, North America's largest uranium miner, has seen an 11-per-cent decrease after five years of gains. A little over a year ago, uranium prices surged after years of stagnation, driven by countries reopening nuclear reactors and rising electricity demand from artificial intelligence and data centres. Russia's 2022 invasion exacerbated supply constraints. For weeks, headwinds have been mounting as investors doubt the stability of shares amidst the continuing situation in Ukraine. Additionally, uncertainty around U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff proposals has led utilities to postpone long-term metal purchase agreements, according to Sprott Asset's John Ciampaglia.
