The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that German automakers have combined solid engineering with advanced technology, crafting vehicles that are both durable and feature-rich. The Globe's Eric Reguly writes that this blend established Germany as an automotive superpower in the postwar decades. German automakers lagged in advanced drivetrain technology, resulting in slow mass production of electric and hybrid vehicles. This allowed Tesla and Chinese companies like BYD and Geely to dominate the market. While German showrooms offer EVs, they are not mass produced or affordable for average families. The most affordable Volkswagen EV, the ID.3, starts at around $48,000 and can reach $77,000. It is no surprise VW is facing difficulties and closing domestic factories for the first time in 88 years. The crisis in the German car industry has sparked panic among technocrats and politicians in Berlin and Brussels as auto jobs vanish across Germany, France and Italy. Their response has been to dilute the EU's green agenda. Industries may need a push to innovate. Allowing European automakers to continue with outdated technologies will only hinder them and allow Chinese companies to gain an advantage in the EV market.
