The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that it is always amusing when the big telcos join forces, single out an industry rival and then purport to champion consumer interests. The Globe's Rita Trichur writes that Ottawa is upholding a decision by the CRTC that allows large companies to resell high-speed Internet service over each other's fibre optic networks, and thereby increasing competition. Specifically, the CRTC is requiring BCE, Telus and SaskTel to give competitors wholesale access to their fibre networks. The policy allows for more competition on existing networks and paves the way for major players to offer discounted bundled services. Some companies are pursuing legal action, others are threatening to slash network investments and an industry association is claiming -- get this -- the decision is bad for consumers. (So sweet!) One would think that the telcos would jump at the chance to vie for new customers outside their traditional territories, but Telus, it seems, is the only major player willing to compete outside its established footprint. Here is an idea: Instead of griping that Telus is operating as a reseller by using fibre networks that it does not own, learn to compete for business instead.
