The National Post reports in its Thursday, Aug. 14, edition that Canada's Industry Minister Melanie Joly is facing backlash from the telecommunications sector after permitting the three major telecom companies to resell fibre optics to Internet service providers. The Post's Antoine Trepanier writes that the criticism is particularly strong in her hometown of Montreal, where the frustration remains high. Cogeco chief executive officer Frederic Perron said: "I am in shock. In shock. I am profoundly disappointed." Cogeco is not thrilled with the minister's first consequential move. He wanted to "ring the alarm bell" because he never thought that "such a damaging, dangerous decision" as the one she made last week "would or could be made." He added: "We had high hopes that this new government would make better decisions for business and the Canadian economy. And what we saw last week, by the minister's decision, is more reminiscent of old Trudeau era, superficial policies." Ms. Joly is expected to respond to a Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission decision allowing companies like Telus to use other providers' networks in Ontario and Quebec without building their own infrastructure.
