The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Oct. 13, edition that the ImagineNATIVE Film and Media Arts Festival in Toronto is celebrating its 24th annual edition next week in the midst of what executive director Naomi Johnson calls an incredible "crunch." The Globe's Barry Hertz writes that Ms. Johnson says the funding she was expecting did not come through or came in reduced. This year's edition might not have been as generously programmed if ImagineNATIVE's organizers had been able to anticipate the decrease in government and corporate funding. Mr. Johnson says, "People and governments need to think about arts organizations like investments." Working in ImagineNATIVEs favour is a current wave of excitement for and coming from the indigenous screen industry. Not only on the film-festival circuit, but on the small screen, too, where FX's universally praised series Reservation Dogs is energizing the pop-cultural discourse. "There are now indigenous film sections on Netflix and [BCE's] Crave, and it's so much easier for a new generation of audience to locate the works in which we see ourselves," says festival director Lindsay Monture.
