The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Bell customers will be able to talk, text and use their mobile data in some areas of the Toronto subway system "in the coming weeks," the telco said Tuesday. Bell announced the news in a text message to its customers one week before the Oct. 3 deadline to offer the service set by Ottawa. "More details to come soon," it added. Earlier this month, federal Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne forced Rogers to give Bell and Telus access to the Rogers-owned wireless network in the subway tunnels so that they can provide service to their own customers. Mr. Champagne has said that the companies could face fines or other penalties if they fail to launch services by that date. Customers of Rogers and Quebecor's Freedom Mobile already have cellular service on the subway, and all riders are able to make emergency 911 calls. Rogers and its two main competitors -- Bell and Telus -- have been involved in a months-long dispute over access to the subway, which owns the company that has sole rights to develop wireless infrastructure inside the subway system. Mr. Champagne also wants cellular coverage be available throughout the entire subway system within three years.
