The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that the Toronto International Film Festival and Bell Canada have jointly clarified the end of their partnership. The Globe's Barry Hertz writes that Bell contributes $5-million each year to TIFF, making the company by far the largest single sponsor in TIFF's portfolio of corporate partners, which also includes lower-tier "major" sponsors RBC, Visa and Bvlgari. In 2022, corporate sponsorships accounted for $13.4-million, or 28 per cent, of TIFF's total earned revenue. On Friday, however, TIFF communications chief Judy Lung released a statement to The Globe regarding the shift: "Over the past 28 years, TIFF and Bell have enjoyed an historic partnership that has greatly contributed to the growth and success of our organizations. Earlier this year, we mutually agreed that this partnership would come to a close at the end of 2023." Over the summer, BCE has raised concerns about a profit squeeze at its media division amid a challenging ad market and competition from foreign-owned streaming services. In June, the company cut 1,300 jobs and said it would close six radio stations and sell three others. Amid an uncertain economy, other corporate sponsors might be hard to find.
