The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday edition that it may be another example of a small tech company taking on the big boys, and the big boys dragging their feet in court. The Post's Barry Critchley, writing in Off the Record, says that based in Aurora, Ont., MediaTube provides IPTV services for television broadcasts, Internet, interactive games, plus video-on-demand and pay-per view. It is also the licensee under a patent known as 477. MediaTube sued Bell Canada for alleged patent infringement in April, 2013; a trial in Federal Court is set for September. MediaTube estimated its claim is worth $350-million plus future royalties and penalties, but an affidavit filed by Doug Lloyd, MediaTube's chief executive officer, believes Bell should pay $1-billion by the time the proceedings reach trial. Mr. Lloyd's affidavit and accompanying documentation detail some of the steps Bell, which worked with MediaTube for many years on commercializing its patent before launching its FibeTV service in 2010, has taken to stall the process. Last fall, for instance, Mr. Lloyd says MediaTube's legal counsel was obliged to compel Bell Canada to comply with its legal obligations as part of discovery process.
