The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that although the latest rift in the Canada-U.S. trade war has created more economic uncertainty, money manager Laura Lau believes the worst is over for investors. The Globe's Brenda Bouw quotes the chief investment officer at Brompton Funds in Toronto saying, "I do think we've seen maximum risk" in terms of tariffs. "It's hard for investors because there's a lot of noise and [U.S. President Donald] Trump likes chaos," she says. However, Ms. Lau believes the worst market impact was in April of last year, when Trump announced sweeping global tariffs as part of what he called "Liberation Day." Since then, many tariffs have been dropped or scaled back and markets have roared ahead. One stock she sold recently is Atkinsrealis, the Montreal project management firm. "We owned it for about a year and a half," Ms. Lau says. "When we bought it, the stock was cheap. It was a troubled engineering contractor and we felt the nuclear business was underappreciated. But now that it has been turned around and it's better recognized by investors, we felt there was a better place to put the money. It had a good run, but we felt that it was time to put the money somewhere else."
