The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that a former SNC executive who was convicted of fraud and corruption seven years ago has been ordered to serve another 10 years in prison after he failed to pay a $24-million fine imposed on him as part of his first sentence. Postmedia's Paul Cherry writes that in a decision delivered at the Montreal courthouse, Superior Court Justice Gregory Moore ordered that Sami Bebawi, 79, return to a federal penitentiary to serve the extension of the sentence he received in January, 2020. Six years ago, a different judge, Superior Court Justice Guy Cournoyer, sentenced Mr. Bebawi to an 8-1/2-year prison term and ordered him to pay a fine of more than $24-million. If he did not pay the fine by Feb. 14, 2025, Judge Cournoyer ruled, Mr. Bebawi would have to serve another 10 years. Mr. Bebawi, tried in vain before Judge Moore to prevent having to return to a federal penitentiary. Judge Moore heard arguments on the issue over recent months. In 2019, Mr. Bebawi was convicted of five charges: fraud, bribing a foreign public official -- former Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi's son, Saadi Gadhafi -- laundering the proceeds of crime and two counts of possessing property obtained by crime.
