The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick is still grumbling about Canada breaking off trade talks last month. A triple-bylined item led by Bill Curry says that yesterday, Mr. Lutnick repeated his view that the U.S. did not make last-minute asks, and that Canada was the bully. Mr. Lutnick said that shortly before talks collapsed, Canadian negotiators started "adding crazy ideas to the mix." He added: "I said to one of the ministers, 'Are you actually trying to blow this up?' And his answer to me was, 'I'm not allowed to say that.'" He did not name the minister. He repeated that Canadian negotiators introduced new terms on trucks late on Friday, Aug. 21, the night the deal fell apart. "I said, 'Really, why are you saying the words 'heavy trucks' Friday at four o'clock when you've never said it before?' And they sort of looked at the ground," he said. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday that Canada is willing to return to the negotiating table once the other side changes its tone: "When the Americans stop doing memes, stop throwing shade, stop trying to be tough and start being serious about having those discussions, we can have those discussions."
