The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney says the United States must change its attitude toward trade talks before Canada will return to the negotiating table. A four-bylined item led by Adrian Morrow quotes Mr. Carney telling reporters at the Davie shipyard in Lévis, Que., "When the Americans go to the negotiation table first, with the right attitude toward our industries and a true partnership, of course we'll come to the negotiating table." The PM ended talks before the deadline on Friday, leading to President Donald Trump imposing 50-per-cent tariffs on $28-billion in Canadian goods. In response, Mr. Carney plans matching levies on Sept. 8, saying it's now up to the U.S. to restart talks. No talks are scheduled. On Monday, Mr. Trump threatened even more tariffs in a few months time and engaged in a war of words with Ontario Premier Doug Ford. What U.S. negotiators presented Canada with on Friday was different than what had been agreed to the previous Tuesday. The two sides had agreed on "most favoured nation" clause, but Washington removed that language from the final proposal. As well, American negotiators toughened their demands to control Canadian trade policy.
