The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Kirsten Hillman, Canada's ambassador to the United States and chief trade negotiator, plans to resign early in the new year, ahead of the 2026 review of the U.S-Mexico-Canada Agreement. The Globe's Robert Fife and Adrian Morrow write that Ms. Hillman's departure allows Prime Minister Mark Carney to assemble a team for upcoming negotiations, especially since President Donald Trump has recently suggested letting the trade pact expire. Ms. Hillman announced her resignation on Tuesday. She said: "More and more of the discussions are going to be part of the CUSMA review process. So I think leaving at the moment when we have time to transition to a team to see it through is the right decision." A source says Ms. Hillman is expected to be replaced by Canadian financier Mark Wiseman, a close friend of the PM. Ms. Hillman has served in the Washington embassy since 2017, including the past six years as ambassador. The PM said in a statement that this is an appropriate time for Ms. Hillman to leave. Formal trade talks between Ottawa and Washington remain frozen. When asked on Sunday if he would resume trade talks with Canada, Mr. Trump replied, "We'll see."
