Globe says Aris Mining stays cool in Colombia

2026-01-12 05:03 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Aris Mining, which operates two gold mines in Colombia, has seen its share price over the past year more than quadruple and the company is now worth $4.5-billion. The Globe's Tim Kiladze and Niall McGee write that over the course of 48 hours last weekend, the geopolitical picture grew complicated for the company. After U.S. President Donald Trump captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, asserting control over the country and its vast oil reserves, he quickly pivoted to Colombia and called its President, Gustavo Petro, "a sick man who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States. He's not going to be doing it for very long." The U.S. President has a history of making threats, only to get distracted by a shiny new object. Latin Americans also have thick skin after decades of coups and dictatorships, so life goes on. While Mr. Trump cannot be ignored, there no evidence yet of panic. If anything, some miners and investors see opportunity, especially if the drug gangs are pushed back. "If that could be removed, then I think investment would be much easier," said Aris boss Neil Woodyer. He also doubts that the U.S. will force regime change in Colombia.
