The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Aug. 11, edition that the announcement that Algonquin Power and Utilities will sell its renewables division arrived on the same day it reported third quarter financial results that fell short of some analysts' estimates. The Globe's David Berman writes that for the three months ended June 30, Algonquin Power reported a loss of $253.2-million, compared with a loss of $33.4-million in the same period in 2022 (all figures U.S.). Adjusted net earnings, which exclude the change in value of Algonquin Power's ownership interest in Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure PLC and costs associated with the termination of the Kentucky Power deal, were $56.2-million or eight cents per share. That is down from $109.6-million or 16 cents per share last year. Algonquin Power attributed some of the decline in quarterly profits to weather-related issues that reduced energy demand and power generated by its wind power assets, as well as higher interest payments on its short-term debt.
