Globe says Apotex pleased with timing of IPO

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Apotex began trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange last week and announced Tuesday it had completed its offering for gross proceeds of $1.49-billion, significantly higher than the $1-billion it first targeted. The Globe's Chris Hannay writes that the company will largely use its proceeds to pay down debt. "These next five years for Canada and the U.S. is a really, I would say, a robust time for loss of exclusivity," chief executive officer Jeff Watson said. One drug he could point to is semaglutide, the active ingredient in the blockbuster drug Ozempic, which is typically taken for Type 2 diabetes or prescribed off-label for weight loss. Ozempic, made by Danish drug maker Novo Nordisk, is by far the best-selling drug in Canada, with $2.9-billion in sales in 2025. Apotex's semaglutide was approved by Health Canada on May 1 and began arriving in Canadian pharmacies by the end of the month. It sells for $78.14 for a four-week supply, about a third the cost of brand-name Ozempic. Apotex's semaglutide was developed in partnership with India's Orbicular Pharma. Mr. Watson said it was a coincidence that Apotex went public so shortly after such a high-profile drug launch.
