Ronald Smith, the New York broker charged for insider trading in Toronto Stock Exchange listing Score Media Inc., has asked a U.S. federal judge to throw out some of the case against him. Prosecutors claim that Mr. Smith traded for himself and clients ahead of a $2-billion takeover of Score Media in 2021. (All figures are in U.S. dollars.) He realized $500,000 for himself while clients made $5-million, according to the government.
The request from Mr. Smith is set out in a motion filed on Oct. 30, 2026, in federal court in New York. He is seeking to dismiss part of the case and is demanding that the government provide more particulars of the remainder. He says that the evidence falls short of implicating him in the insider trading scheme alleged by the government.
As Mr. Smith sees things, he "has been pinned as the tail in an insider trading case" that initially targeted others. He says that trades he entered were done for clients at the behest of his co-accused, a New York broker named Jordan Meadow (who pleaded guilty to related charges).
