Federal prosecutors in Los Angeles have requested a 15-month jail term for Amit Raj Beri, a California man charged for promoting Emerald Health Pharmaceuticals Inc., a supposed drug developer, as "Giving Us Over 4,900% Potential Gains." The government claims that Mr. Beri, 48, conspired with Vancouver's Avtar Dhillon and others in a scheme that involved $4.2-million in undisclosed payments from insiders. (All figures are in U.S. dollars.) As part of the scheme, he received $860,304 in undisclosed compensation, along with meals, beverages and entertainment, prosecutors say.
The request from prosecutors comes as part of a case against Mr. Beri and others for promotions run through an entity called Palm Beach Venture. The government claimed that Mr. Beri served as a conduit between analysts at Palm Beach Ventures and executives looking to secretly promote a stock. There was no trial for Mr. Beri, as he pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to tout securities for undisclosed compensation.
