A Boston judge has allowed Vancouver's Marco Babini to leave prison while he awaits trial for a 2012 scheme on the U.S. markets. Prosecutors claim that Mr. Babini and others planned to boost a supposed biotech listing, arranging for kickbacks, paid tout sheets and manipulative trading. The scheme ran afoul of authorities after the men included an undercover FBI agent in their plans.

While Mr. Babini's co-accused pleaded guilty long ago, his case was considerably delayed by a five-year extradition battle. That process only recently came to an end, with the U.S. Marshals Service taking him into custody on July 7, 2023. Upon his arrival in the U.S., Mr. Babini pleaded not guilty and asked that the judge release him on bond while he awaits trial.

To that end, the judge issued an order on Monday, July 17, in which she released Mr. Babini, albeit with some conditions. He must live under house arrest, residing with his uncle in New York. He must also pay a $100,000 bond and pay the cost of electronic monitoring. (All figures are in U.S. dollars.)
