LONDON, Ontario -- (Business Wire)

CARFAX Canada reported 393,200 vehicles in the first half of 2026 with at least one past accident reported on Canadian vehicle history reports. These accidents have cost around $5.4 billion to vehicle owners and insurance companies and represent almost 58% of the total vehicles found with previous accidents in 2025.

Last year, over half a million vehicles were found with past accidents reported on CARFAX Canada Vehicle History Reports totaling $9.2 billion in accident claims.

Beyond collisions, CARFAX Canada uncovered 23,700 vehicles damaged by weather across the country, with Alberta reporting the most claims for hail and wind related damages.

The top 3 provinces with the most weather-related claims:

  • Alberta: 17,600
  • Manitoba: 4,300
  • Ontario: 3,200

CARFAX Canada data shows Alberta continues to lead the country’s weather-related claims with over $150 million in damages, of which 97% are related to hail. Ontario follows with nearly $23 million in claims, and Quebec takes third place totaling $1 million in weather-related repairs.

The top 3 provinces with the most expensive hail-related claims:

  • Alberta: $145.1 million
  • Ontario: $18.5 million
  • Quebec: $829 thousand

The top 3 provinces with the most expensive wind-related claims:

“When a consumer is made aware of previous damage to a vehicle, they can take the steps to ask additional questions so they can feel more confident when buying a repaired vehicle,” said Shawn Vording, President at CARFAX Canada. “Knowing a vehicle’s damage history is critical on both the acquisition and selling sides to pay the right price and to disclose previous damage. In today’s market, the importance of knowing a vehicle's history goes well beyond previous repairs to avoid additional fraud and scams like odometer rollbacks and liens.”

Canadians are reminded to always check the vehicle history before finalizing the deal for past accidents and damage, money owing, odometer rollback and potential VIN fraud. It is also recommended to do a proper test drive and have a licensed mechanic complete an inspection to avoid scams. CARFAX Canada searches billions of data records to help Canadians make the right choice when buying used vehicles.
