The National Post reports in its Saturday edition the Mounties are now co-ordinating the investigation into a series of fake bomb threats targeting WestJet flights. Postmedia's Douglas Quan writes a day earlier, the RCMP had said investigations into the hoaxes were being led by local police where each of the emergency landings took place.
The RCMP then announced Friday the force has stepped in to oversee all the investigations.
"I can confirm that the RCMP is taking a national co-ordination role to further these investigations in collaboration with our municipal and provincial partners," Staff Sgt. Julie Gagnon said in an e-mail.
WestJet has faced a public relations nightmare this week after five flights were targeted by bomb threats.
The latest threat on Thursday involved a flight from Las Vegas to Victoria. Passengers had to disembark in Victoria without their luggage and wait as police and a dog team searched the plane.
So far, police and WestJet officials have declined to speculate on possible motives or whether they think the same person could be involved.
Whoever is responsible could be charged with a range of offences, including uttering threats and committing a terrorist act.
