Former Valeant Pharmaceuticals Inc. executive Gary Tanner, defending charges over a $40-million kickback scheme, denies that he did anything wrong. (All figures are in U.S. dollars.) He says that he was just doing what Valeant paid him to do. He developed a program that steered consumers away from cheaper generic drugs, with the program resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars in sales for Valeant.
Prosecutors in New York claim that Mr. Tanner was part of a kickback scheme related to Philidor Rx Services LLC, a controversial on-line pharmacy. He and a co-accused, Andrew Davenport, pressed Valeant into making a deal to acquire Philidor, while enriching themselves by $40-million, the government says. The deal became the source of much controversy when it became public, with skeptics questioning whether Philidor was favouring Valeant drugs over cheaper generic alternatives.
