Silver Standard Resources Inc. is a defendant in a wrongful dismissal suit filed in the Supreme Court of British Columbia by its former investor relations director, Steve Hards. He claims that he sent a resignation e-mail in an emotional outburst earlier this year, but did not mean to quit his job. He then attempted to return to work, but a week later the company said it would not have him back, he claims.

The allegations are contained in a notice of claim that Mr. Hards, 43, filed at the Vancouver courthouse on Friday, Sept. 13. Mr. Hards says he began working at Silver Standard on May 28, 2012. He was a full-time employee, with a salary of $196,000 per year plus benefits and stock options.

It appears that all went well with his employment until April, 2013, when he says he began experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety. He had recently learned that his father was undergoing tests for cancer, according to the suit. He was also enrolled in courses at the University of London, and was under pressure from final exams, he claims. This stress caused him sleeping difficulties, and he began taking sleeping pills, his lawsuit states.
