The Successful Investor, in the November, 2017, issue, says hold SNC-Lavalin Group Inc., recently $57. The Investor said buy 12 times from April, 2000, to December, 2015, at prices ranging from $12 to $56 (the stock split 3 for 1 in March, 2006). Assuming a $1,000 investment for each of the 12 buys, the $12,000 position is now worth $34,656. SNC is an engineering and construction company that specializes in large infrastructure projects such as bridges and transit systems. It recently paid $3.6-billion to acquire WS Atkins, an engineering firm in the United Kingdom. Atkins focuses on industrial projects such as highways, railways and nuclear power plants. It will thus reduce SNC's exposure to cyclical oil and gas customers, which previously contributed a high 46 per cent of overall revenue. If one excludes costs related to the takeover, SNC's earnings will likely reach $3.20 a share in 2017 and $5 a share in 2020, up from just $2.58 a share in 2016. Yet the company also faces unique challenges. In particular, it is facing federal criminal charges over accusations that it used bribes to win Libyan construction contracts between 2001 and 2011. The stock remains a hold.
