The Investment Reporter, in its May 15, 2015, issue, refreshes its buy of Jean Coutu Group (PJC) Inc., recently $23.31. The Reporter said buy 26 times from Nov. 17, 1995, to Dec. 12, 2014, at prices ranging from $8.92 to $35.40 (the stock split 2 for 1 on Sept. 27, 2000, and on Sept. 23, 2002). A $1,000 investment for each of the 26 buys is now worth $66,783. The drug retailer earned $219-million or $1.16 a share in fiscal 2015. This compares with earnings of $224-million or $1.09 a share in fiscal 2014 (excluding a gain from the sale of Coutu's stake in Rite Aid). Earnings per share went up despite lower total earnings because the company bought back 2.57 million Class A shares. Its revenue rose by 2.9 per cent to $2.81-billion thanks to a 2.9-per-cent rise in same-store sales. Same-store sales in fiscal 2014, by contrast, fell by 1 per cent. Coutu plans to spend $130-million this year to expand its store network. Cash flow of $338.5-billion, which rose by 0.8 per cent last year, should allow the company to make such investments. Coutu expects to earn $1.25 a share in fiscal 2016 and $1.34 a share in fiscal 2017. It remains a buy for gains and 44-cent dividends with a yield of 1.9 per cent.
