The Investment Reporter, in its Dec. 12, 2014, issue, says buy Jean Coutu Group (PJC) Inc., recently $27. The Reporter said buy 25 times from Nov. 17, 1995, to June 6, 2014, at prices ranging from $8.92 to $35.40 (the stock split 2 for 1 on Sept. 27, 2000, and again on Sept. 23, 2002). A $1,000 investment for each of the 25 buys is now worth $76,356. The drug retailer earned $108-million or 57 cents a share in the first half of fiscal 2015. This was up from adjusted earnings of $104-million or 49 cents a share in fiscal 2014. Revenue inched up by 2.1 per cent to $1.36-billion thanks to a 1.3-per-cent increase in same-store sales. Two things kept a lid on Coutu's revenue. One is an increasingly competitive market; and the other is the rising popularity of lower-cost generic drugs. This displaces higher-cost brand-name drugs and reduces the dollar value of sales. Coutu notes, however, that the expanding generic drug segment will improve consolidated margins. Its subsidiary Pro Doc Ltd., a manufacturer of generic drugs, is also becoming increasingly valuable. Coutu has zero net debt and should continue raising your dividend. It currently pays out 40 cents a share for a yield of 1.5 per cent. Buy.
