The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition that more intrigue emerged Monday one week before a special shareholders meeting of Pacific Insight Electronics ($18.80) called to approve a takeover by American-based Methode Electronics Inc. The Post's Barry Critchley, writing in Off the Record, says that the intrigue was supplied by a last-minute "written proposal" received from China's Shenzhen Kaizhong Precision Technology Co. for $24.35 a share. Methode has agreed to pay $18.50 a share in an-all cash offer that has been accepted by the board. One financial adviser interpreted the trading pattern as the market's lack of belief in the potential Chinese offer. "If the market believed the $24.35 was real, why isn't the stock trading near that level?" he asked. "Instead it's trading just above the $18.50 Methode has offered." The adviser figures those who bought above $18.50 could be in for a small loss come Sept. 26. However, two hedge funds, Montreal-based Crystalline Management and Toronto-based MM Asset Management, have disclosed a significant stake in Pacific Insight and do not intend to support the Methode offer. The financial managers believe the company should fetch a more attractive offer.
