Stock Pickers Digest, in the October, 2016, issue, says buy North West Company Inc., recently $27.10. Previously, Stock Pickers said buy in March, 2016, at $30.64. A $1,000 investment then is now worth $867. North West sells food and other everyday products and services through 225 stores, mainly in Northern Canada and Alaska, with some locations in remote parts of the South Pacific and the Caribbean. As well, in 2002, it signed a 30-year agreement with Giant Tiger (an Ottawa-based seller of discount general merchandise), under which North West was granted the exclusive right to open and operate Giant Tiger stores in Western Canada. In the quarter ended July 31, 2016, which was North West's fourth quarter of fiscal 2016, the company earned 34 cents a share, down from 38 cents a share a year earlier. Sales edged up to $460.6-million from $448.7-million. North West now trades at 16.7 times its likely fiscal 2017 earnings of $1.62 a share. Its dividend yields 4.6 per cent. Buy.
