The National Post reports in its Thursday, Aug. 16, edition that an anti-poverty activist and Order of Canada recipient who said she was "dressed for shackles" went to jail on Wednesday, sentenced to seven days for defying a court injunction by protesting the proposed Kinder Morgan pipeline. The Post's Behdad Mahichi writes that Jean Swanson, who is also a candidate for Vancouver city council, and Susan Lambert, a former president of the British Columbia Teachers' Federation, were among seven people who appeared before B.C. Supreme Court Justice Kenneth Affleck. All pleaded guilty to contempt of court, were sentenced to seven days behind bars and were taken straight to jail. Ms. Swanson, speaking outside court before the proceeding, said she was "dressed for shackles" and does not fear jail time. "We're just going to have to keep doing this to stop the pipeline, it's insane." As occupants of the protest encampment Camp Cloud on Burnaby Mountain stay put despite a court-ordered eviction, Ms. Swanson said there is a possibility more people could face sentencing. "It's pretty bad that the City of Burnaby is doing this. They're supposed to be against the pipeline. They shouldn't be bringing forward an injunction," Ms. Swanson said.
