The Investment Reporter, in its Sept. 16, 2016, issue, says buy Enbridge Inc., recently $53.25. The Reporter said buy 23 times from Nov. 15, 1995, to Jan. 9, 2015, at prices ranging from $30.30 to $65.50 (the stock split 2 for 1 on Oct. 13, 1998, on May 6, 1999, and again on May 18, 2005). An investment of $1,000 for each of the 23 buys would now be worth $73,112. The energy giant has agreed to acquire Houston-based Spectra Energy. Enbridge president and CEO Al Monaco will head the combined company, which will remain headquartered in Calgary. The transaction will create the largest energy infrastructure company in North America; its enterprise value will total $165-billion. The Reporter thinks the bid will succeed for various reasons. Firstly, the directors of both companies unanimously approved the deal. Secondly, Spectra's shareholders will earn a premium, and with the shares of Enbridge rising, the premium and automatic capital gains have risen as well. Spectra shareholders will receive 0.984 Enbridge share for each share held; this means that Enbridge will not have to borrow money for this purchase. Enbridge hopes to close the deal in Q1 2017. In the meantime, the stock remains a buy.
