New York spot gold closed down $2.20 to $1,122.80 Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange fell 1.14 points to 552.61 while the TSX Gold Index gained 0.29 points to 121.99. Gold miners in Canada, down much of the day, recovered at the close. Detour Gold Corp. (DGC) led the way, gaining 33 cents to $13.07 on 1.09 million shares. Iamgold Corp. (IMG) also did well, gaining seven cents to $2.07 on 953,000 shares. Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) was one of the few decliners. It lost three cents to $8.50 on 5.18 million shares.

Dale McClanaghan's BCM Resources Corp. (B), unchanged at five cents on 16,000 shares, can earn a 60-per-cent interest in the Thompson Knolls property in central Utah from Inland Explorations Ltd. BCM is familiar with the private Inland. Mr. McClanaghan, president and CEO of BCM, is a director of Inland, while Deborah Goldbloom, CEO of Inland, is a director of BCM. Craig Thomas, a lawyer, is a director of both companies and Lindsay Bottomer, an Inland director, is a former BCM director.) Mr. McClanaghan and his crew, wearing their BCM hats, agreed to pay their Inland alter-egos $375,000 in cash, issue 6.5 million shares and spend $10-million on exploration over four years, for an initial 51-per-cent interest in the property.
