Globe says Westshore's Pattison sleeps soundly amid din

2017-05-10 07:27 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that B.C. billionaire Jim Pattison has some things to say about the current round of lumber tariffs and other trade issues. The Globe's Brent Jang quotes the normally media-shy Mr. Pattison, 88, as saying that he has learned to sleep soundly next to the U.S. elephant. The latest clash marks Round 5 in the cross-border lumber dispute. "I am disappointed that we have to go through this, but you know, it's just part of business," the chairman and chief executive officer of Jim Pattison Group told The Globe. Jim Pattison Group boasts diversified assets that include car dealerships, billboard advertising, supermarkets and radio stations. Mr. Pattison recently held a 27.3-per-cent stake in Westshore, the operator of a coal-shipping facility south of Vancouver. Westshore has become ensnarled in trade tensions, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau saying that Ottawa is considering a request from British Columbia to ban exports of U.S. and Canadian thermal coal from B.C. ports. Mr. Pattison refuses to get tied up in knots about disruptive "events," and apparently had no criticism of B.C. Premier Christy Clark's threat to ban what she called "filthy" thermal coal exports.
