Globe says WestJet hopes higher loonie will lift sales

2017-07-31 07:36 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that Canada's rise in interest rates has added to the loonie's value, now at 80 U.S. cents. The Globe's Eric Atkins writes, however, that not everyone is cheering. Avery Shenfeld, chief economist at CIBC World Markets, said: "This has the greatest negative impact on exporters, particularly those without a lot of import content in what they sell. That would include not only manufacturers, but also the domestic tourism sector." Retailers and importers benefit from the Canadian dollar's stronger buying power. The currency's gain makes it less likely the central bank will raise interest rates again in the fall, because it has the effect of dampening economic activity and inflation. WestJet Airlines said that a stronger loonie would reduce U.S.-dollar-denominated expenses such as aircraft leases, some maintenance costs and airport fees, in addition to plane purchases. As the Canadian dollar rises, trips abroad become more affordable. "If the Canadian dollar is higher as a result of rising interest rates resulting from healthy inflation and a healthy economic outlook, then we will generally see more travel by Canadians," WestJet spokesman Lauren Stewart said.
