The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Nov. 17, edition that a memo
obtained by CNN shows
Canada's softwood-lumber and
livestock producers are being
targeted by Donald Trump's transition
team, which calls for the
president-elect to renegotiate the North American
free-trade agreement.
The Globe's Steven Chase and Paul Waldie write that the memo outlines a plan to reshape
NAFTA -- which Mr. Trump promised
during the campaign he
would "entirely renegotiate" or
"terminate." A costly new softwood-lumber
war -- with huge tariffs on Canadian
lumber -- is due to erupt
any day now between the two
countries. Finance Minister Bill Morneau
struck a sunny tone
Wednesday, saying he is confident
of finding a "win-win"
solution on difficult trade
issues, including softwood lumber, with Mr.
Trump.
"We will work together with
the incoming United States administration
to ensure that we
create opportunities for Canadians. And you know, we're
confident that we'll get to a
place that's better than we are
now," he said Wednesday. Ambassador David MacNaughton says
trade has become a dirty word
in the U.S.
He says anti-trade protectionists are
feeling emboldened by Mr.
Trump's election.
