Van Sun says West Fraser, Canfor feel market winds

The Vancouver Sun reports in its Tuesday edition British Columbia's resource sector was dealt another blow Monday in the China-inspired rout of stock markets. The Sun's Derrick Penner writes the S&P/TSX composite closed Monday at 13,052.74 points, down 420.93 points from Friday's close and down from its recent high of 15,450 in April. B.C.'s big forest companies were comparatively resilient on the stock markets, but their share values were not spared in the sell-off. "(The Chinese market) is a little, I'll call it unsettled," said Doug Routledge at lobby group COFI. While B.C. sales of forest products into China have been "up and down," Mr. Routledge said they have been trending downward. "What's helping to buffer us a little bit is the, slowly but surely, strengthening of the U.S. housing market," he added. As shipments to China have slowed, companies have been able to shift sales south of the border. However, shares in West Fraser Timber finished the day down 1.6 per cent at $50.76, but that was after it bounced between a low of $45.03 and a high of $52.30. Canfor shares settled at $20.09, down 1.1 per cent, but dropped to as low as $19 per share at the start of trading and bounced as high as $20.48.
