Vuzix delivers helmet displays to Natick Soldier

2011-10-03 08:45 ET - News Release

Mr. Paul Travers reports

VUZIX DELIVERS SUNLIGHT READABLE SEE-THROUGH HMD SYSTEMS TO THE NATICK SOLDIER RD&E CENTER

Vuzix Corp. has successfully delivered to the Natick Soldier RD&E Center (NSRDEC) two different sets of highly advanced optical see-through helmet-mounted display (HMD) systems. Each of Vuzix's waveguide and quantum beamsplitter optical systems delivered to NSRDEC demonstrate various performance characteristics. The first design affords a smaller form factor, and the second, a superhigh brightness system achieving a display screen outputting 2,400 nits for use in direct sunlight.

The delivered HMD systems are monocular see-through head-mounted displays designed to clip-on to ballistic glasses or helmets. The monocular displays improve the user's situational awareness over current immersive monocular models and incorporate state-of-the-art optics and image processing electronics that may connect to any device with VGA or composite video out capability. The systems delivered have been optimized for brightness and functionality, colours are bright and the image is true, with low distortion. For additional operator comfort, the systems employ a liquid crystal light shutter as a means to control non-desired external light and the level of translucency.

Paul Travers, Vuzix president and chief executive officer, said: "Situational awareness is critical to a user's safety in the field, and their ability to react quickly. We continue to improve our technology to solve these issues and create larger, brighter and higher performing near-eye imaging systems for a broad range applications and environments."

The main goal for this $345,000 project awarded to Vuzix was to integrate several key technologies within the wearable sensors and physiological status monitoring technologies in the firefighter's duty uniform and protective gear worn by emergency responders as well as soldiers. Further this tool could provide information that will lead to better fitness programs to help individuals cope with high stress levels and other stressors.

We seek Safe Harbor.
