TELSON MINING CORPORATION ANNOUNCES CASUALTY AT CAMPO MORADO
A Telson Mining Corp. employee has died at the Campo Morado mine in Guerrero,
Mexico.
Jose Antonio Berlanga, Telson's chief executive officer, stated: "We are
very saddened by this unfortunate and tragic event and send our
condolences and sympathies to the family of the deceased; the thoughts
and prayers of Telson's board of directors and management are with his
family, friends and co-workers during this unfortunate time. We are and
will continue providing as much support to the deceased's family as
possible."
The deceased worker was the supervisor of mechanical maintenance at
Campo Morado and was fatally injured while performing repairs to an
underground articulated haulage dump truck. The haulage truck has an
electronic braking system which failed, immediately stopping the vehicle
as it was navigating a decline. The mechanic supervisor was called to
investigate the problem and while attempting to fix the truck its
failed electronic braking system unexpectedly engaged releasing the
brakes while he was working underneath the vehicle. Mine safety crews
and first aid were rushed to the scene and within 15 minutes the injured
worker was being attended to by a doctor and nurse and transported to
the nearest town Arcelia by ambulance attended to by paramedics.
Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.
Operations at Campo Morado were temporarily suspended in order for mine
safety crews to conduct an initial investigation into the accident. The
preliminary findings have attributed the accident to human error,
including not blocking the vehicle wheels to guard against unexpected
movement of the vehicle while conducting mechanical investigations and
repairs, and accordingly no cause was found to suspend mining operations
longer than two to three days to allow an independent third party investigation
of the incident. Telson has reported the accident to all required state
and federal authorities and expects that an investigator from the
Ministry of Labour (Worker's Compensation and Safety) will attend the
mine site this week.
Telson has stringent health and safety protocols in place including
regular safety meetings.
