Post says Sherritt, others likely to stay depressed

The Financial Post reports in its Saturday edition that it is far too early to think about a rebound in commodities. Post columnist Peter Hodson writes that there are, in fact, still significant risks for equity investors because there are a lot of companies that risk bankruptcy under current conditions. The U.S. Federal Reserve is expected to raise interest rates and the U.S. economy is a bastion of strength, so the greenback will likely continue to stay strong. Since all commodities are priced in U.S. dollars, this makes the price of them to buyers in other countries more expensive. The higher the U.S. dollar goes, the less likelihood there is of a commodity rally. Then there is overproduction. As long as there is overproduction, commodities are very unlikely to show much strength. If you have been an unfortunate investor in commodity stocks in the past year, you might be holding some stocks, such as Thompson Creek Metals or Sherritt International, that have had huge losses. These particular two are respectively down 83 and 75 per cent this year. Many commodity stocks could still be hit in the next few weeks as investors sell for tax reasons and fund managers sell to get some of their losers off their books.
