FP says GM's Cami a symbol of what's wrong with NAFTA

2017-09-19 07:53 ET - In the News

The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition that the Ontario plant at which about 2,500 General Motors of Canada auto workers are on strike is "the poster child for what's wrong with NAFTA," according to Unifor president Jerry Dias. The Post's Alicja Siekierska writes that Unifor members at GM's Cami plant in Ingersol, Ont., walked out Sunday after negotiations fell apart. Unifor said a priority was obtaining a commitment from GM to designate the plant as the lead producer of the next-generation Chevrolet Equinox. The Equinox is produced at the Cami facility and two plants in Mexico. Long-term production commitments were a significant concern for unionized workers this summer after about 400 employees were laid off from the plant when GM shifted production of the GMC Terrain to Mexico. Mr. Dias said: "If you can do that with the Terrain, you can certainly do that with the Equinox, and people are legitimately concerned. ... This is one of the most productive plants in the world, and it's losing out because they pay their workers $2 an hour in Mexico. It's ridiculous." The strike comes in the midst of NAFTA renegotiations that have seen the auto industry emerge as a priority in discussions.
