The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Oct. 31, edition that Conservative politicians have seized on the controversy surrounding Canada's relationship with Saudi Arabia to push for the resuscitation of the Energy East pipeline project to New Brunswick. The Globe's Konrad Yakabuski writes that instead of cancelling a deal to sell light-armoured vehicles to Saudi Arabia, Conservatives argue the most effective way to sanction the Saudis is to stop buying their oil. "We should be focusing on getting our oil to Eastern Canada so we're not reliant on Saudi Arabia," former Conservative international trade minister Ed Fast told The Globe after the Trudeau government announced it would suspend new arms permits to Saudi Arabia pending the outcome of an investigation into the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Mr. Fast's comments echoed those of Conservative leader Andrew Scheer, who last week attacked opponents of the stalled Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. Canada imported $474-million worth of Saudi oil in August alone, according to Statistics Canada. Indeed, Saudi oil imports have been rising in recent years, reaching an average of 142,000 barrels a day in the first eight months of 2018.
